I bought a new $85.00 JCWhiteny batt.for My 1988 1400 Intruder. It was great for 2 months then it slowly stopped working.
I knew it could not be my new battery so I fixed other things. Bought a Starter relay for 50 bucks, battery cables for about 40 bucks and a trickle charger for $59.95. Nothing worked it would start fine once or twice then the it would not start. Did I tell you I had to be towed 4 times in 3 months?
The worst thing it did to me was Stop at a Harley shop. I was talking to a guy and he wanted to hear my Nasty Twins. I fire the bike up and it sounds great. I go back inside to pay my bill and 2 minutes later it will not fire. I WAS PISSED.
To make a long story short I returned the JCWhitney battery and bought one from G-man. Oh my god this battery is awsome. The bike always fires and I never worry about the battery. It is about $100.00. One guy jumped his truck with his G man battery. PLUS IT HAS A 2 YEAR FREE REPLACEMENT WARRENTY.
G-MAN BATTERY IS THE BEST

Ok I installed the Odessy 625 after minor Bat. box mods. dropped the bottom cover 1/2" could have been 3/4 but works fine..the right side of the box had allready been cut out. and the battery sticks out 1/2 on the Right side. I thought I had a bad starter or the compression release was not working but. there are no problems now.. I think I had started it 30 times for only a couple minutes and it still seems to have a full charge.. Paid $104. for the Batt..

I have had some starting problems latly in the mornings, newer shore what it is? after the bike stands for a day or so.
I thougth the alternator did not give enough charge, or an old batery, but it takes charge good, (the batery).
Then as I tested it yesterday, what the charge output was, I had between 14. and up to 17.5V
@5000 RPM and High beam on, as the manual sais.
I wonder has anybody seen this on their bike and is this to high?
Glad for any input, So I then, can eliminate this and start to search the fuel side of this problem

Purchased Yuasa battery YTX 16-BS-1 for VS 1400 Intruder in 2001. Still working at full charge. About $90 now. Will buy another when needed.

I ran a remote jumper lead from the positive post on the starter solenoid..always hot side and a negative lead from the front seat mount bolt. This would also be effective for a cig lighter instalation. I would definetly use 8gauge wire minimum because of the amps needed to jump it from a charger/car/bike/other above 2 amps. The leads are routed under the rear seat. Tape the ends good or it will be July 4th a bit early.

Just changed over to an AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery instead of the liquid electrolyte OEM from BatteryStuff.com. Best investment yet. Cost $73 but never having to put the bike on a lift to extract the battery is well worth it. The only problem I had is that the square adapters used in the OEM setup would not work, you have to crimp a set of nuts into the terminals and carefully thread the bolts in. A bit fiddly, but you do this once. The battery is completely sealed so you dont add water - and it's not one of the phoney "sealed" ones that simply reabsorb the hydrogen gas produced when charging. The electrolyte is gelled, spillproof, and UPS shippable ready to install. If the bike takes a dump, there is absolutely no chance of spilling acid all over.

I've read horror stories about guys paying as much
as $120 for a Yuasa at the Suzuki dealer!
My 99 VS800 still has the ORIGINAL Yuasa battery
in it! That makes it going on 6 years old so I
know it's past due to be replaced.
I checked interstate batteries at
http://www.ibsa.com/estore/default.asp
and used the dealer locator to find a cycle shop
close by who handled them.
He got me the exact replacement-- a Yuasa
YB16B-A1 for less than $60 bucks!!
I hope this one lasts as long as the original!

I just got my sealed Magna battery from O'reillys Auto Parts and It cost about $70. They said they couldn't get the cheaper liquid acid filled battery, but I looked on their parts list and it was there. Guess they will lie to make a buck. Oh well, I wanted the better battery anyway. The liquid acid battery only has a 90 day free replacement while mine has 1 year.

Advance Auto Parts has Magna Power sealed batteries. I work there, but am not advertising! Just offering helpful information. I have one in my Yamaha and it works great. They're charged, sealed, gel cell and ready to go out of the box. If they don't have it in stock, they can get it overnight for no additional charge. I've had mine for a couple months... not long enough to really tell anything other than it still works fine. It also has a 1 year free replacement warranty.

I BUY THE BAT FROM JC WHITTNEY, ABOUT $ 42.00, IT'S GOOD FOR 2 TO 3 YEARS. IT'S CHEAP, ALWAYS HAVE A FRESH BAT, AND FOR THE PRICE, IT CAN'T BE BEAT! PLUS IT'S THE EXACT FIT FOR THE 800.

I have done this on several bikes. Radio shack and others have 12V recepticles unless you are looking for a true cig lighter. I have put them on the side stuctures conncting directly to the positive pole with a 5 amp fuse and secured them with the nylon straps. On the 1400 I have not had that much trouble hooking a 2 amp charger directly to the battery.

Does anyone know how to hook up a cigarette lighter? This way, we could use a battery charger (solar trickle is my idea) to charge low batteries. Or if anyone has a good idea how to EASILY charge our batteries, PLEASE let me know! Thanks.

I've had problems starting my 1400 for about the past month. I think my charging system is fine. Started it Friday, but didn't ride. Kicked over almost instantly. Tried to start it yesterday, but the battery would only turn it over twice. Called Westco. They suggested I check my charging system, but also said that they were sending a replacement free of charge. Great company. I usually ride into Novemeber so hopefully this will solve the problem.

Purchased the WestCo Battery about a month ago. Delivery was quick and total cost with shipping was $69. The only two problems with this battery are:
1) It's a PITA getting the cables hooked up to the terminals. Design could have been better.
2) The cover was difficult to reinstall because of clearnace problems created buy the cables. The cables nested nicely against the original battery.
All in all, I'd buy one again because the battery has been excellent.

As of 09.07.04 batterymart.com appears to have the YUASU battery for the 1400 @ approx. 75 bucks delivered. Best price I have seen for this battery.
