1400 Truder... All My bikes have run Mobil 1, My Boat,Yard Tractor and Truck. for as long as they have made it.. I Now use the Gold Cap . Sure motorcycle use is different than your car, therefore the Gears in the Transmission beat it to death. I can't find the article but I will so everyone can read it especially the Amsoil People. mobil 1 and Shell Rotella had the greatest Shear strength, whick means they will hold up longer, with the gears grinding the oil up Longer than any motorcycle or Special Trick oils.. I pay $5 per Qt. there is no reason to spend more. Except for Bush price increases.

scottg, you should check the oil with the bike straight up not leaning on the sidestand. The oil level should be between the two lines when looking at the sight glass. I try to get my oil as close to the top line as I can.

I changed my 1993 VS1400 (8900 miles)to Shell Rotella 5W40 about one year and 1500 miles ago and stopped hard shifts and smoothed up the clutch release. Couldn't get it into neutral without a fight before, now no problem. Plenty hot in SC this time of year and no problems. From what I found on the I-net, most "synthetic" oils are actually fossil types refined extra pure to meet govt standards to call them "synthetic". Appears Amsoil and Mobil One are the only true "synthetics" around. Shell works for me. Check your oil every tank of gas to detect unexpected oil loss. The minute it takes is nothing compared to time and money for rebuilding an engine/clutch/transmission.

Hey quimmer, I think you posted in the wrong section. I have had a similar problem on a 1975 suzuki gt380. drove me nuts for a couple of years before I found the actual problem. I cleaned and rebuilt the carbs 3 times with no luck. As I drove the bike it would feel like I was losing power. If I parked the bike for a couple of days it would leak gas out of the carbs. FINALLY I figured out that the vents in the gas cap had rusted shut! as I drove the bike a vacuum would build up in the gas tank and restrict the flow through the carbs and at night the gas would build pressure and overflow the bowls....since you have an older bike with few miles on it, I would check the rust in your gas tank and gas filter and the gas cap vents. And then clean the carbs once!

I been having trouble down shifting in hot weather. When dropping to lower gear, shifter feels as if it lies flat until pressure builds up and am then able to click shifter down to lower gear.Seal was thought to be the problem. It was better for a while but problem has returned. I've replaced the clutch, always change oil at 3=3500 miles.I'm using 20-50W oil. Comments? Thoughts?

I just bought a sweet intruder 800. I'm an Amsoil dealer so naturally I'll be putting amsoil in it ASAP. I'm in the Seattle area. If anyone local needs some, contact me.

Wow! All the information about oil! Been using 10w40 for 33 years, well whenever it was on the market, Valvoline,Havoline or Castrol. Change oil in spring and summer with a new filter. I might try a 50/50 blend now. Oh!,I've been adding just a little bitty bit of automatic transmission fuild.

I've been checking all the posts all the posts about oil/oil filters since it is the important maintenance item our bikes. Motorcycles should not use car oil. The owners manual state that and a lot of bike mechanics agree. Since a bike use same oil for the engine, tranny and clutch the oil companices now formulate oils specifically for bikes. I use Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50. Yes, it is a little thicker when it's cool, however; it will maintain its max vescosity better when it real hot. The Mobil 1 V-Twin is also setup to handle temperatures above 300F. The rear cyclinder is the one that gets the hottest and this oil will not thin out with the high temp. Oil filters in my opinon are a personal choice, I like K&N personally for multiple reasons. One, they are from a very good company who seems to know quite a bit about filter and two it has a 17mm nut welded to the top for ease of installation and removal. No slippage problems with my VS1400.

Motul "3000" 10w40 or 20w50.... no synth....shifts better than w/ Bel-Ray or anything else. Used synth in my Vulcan 1500, clutch hated it...never, ever again will I put synth in a wet clutch bike. Husband's V-Max has over 60,000 mi., only on 3rd clutch, motor has never been opened.

Oil performance: keeping oil temp down keeps viscosity up & minimizes oil breakdown. Oil is the coolant in Intruder 1400s so oil temp is doubly important. You can reduce oil temp by improving oil radiator performance. If bike miles are up, radiator performance can likely be improved by ensuring air can get through, as designed. Often it cannot because: A) airways are blocked with dirt & bugs. Solution: hose from behind to push whatever's blocking it, back the way it came (soaking first, helps). B) radiator cooling fins are easily bent and damaged. My observation is the average 1400's radiator's airways are 50% or more blocked by say 30k on the clock. Solution? Sharpen a flat blade screw-driver & grind the tips of a small pair of pliers to suit, & carefully reset all fins (copy the shape of the undamaged fins). It takes care, a steady hand, patience and time, but it's well worth the effort. My experience is, at the right temp, multi-grade mineral oils will do the job.

I asked the same question about my VS800 a few years ago and someone from this site told me to add a little bit of MARVEL MYSTERY OIL to my crank case and the problem would disappear. It did, now I add it to every oil change I do, and am still running regular oil. NO SLIPS!!RUNS GREAT !!!!
